Your Oak Farms Questions, Answered

Q: What is the 5-Point Purity Pledge?

A: We know purity in products matters at your family’s table. We strive to give you the best by pledging that we follow a five-point purity checklist.

Q: What does the date on a container mean?

A: The “Sell By” date you see on the container means that the product should remain fresh until that date as long as it’s unopened prior to purchase and stored properly once purchase is made

Q: How long will the product last after the expiration date?

A: Dairy products are very perishable. For best quality, you should use the product before the expiration of “Sell By” date. The amount of times the product has been opened and resealed and the amount of time it has been left unrefrigerated during each use impacts how long it will last. Drinking straight from the container affects how fast it will perish, as well, because bacteria in your mouth may cause the product to spoiler at a quicker rate. As long as the product looks, smells and tastes the way it’s supposed to, it’s probably fine to eat or drink.

Q: Can refrigerator temperature affect the shelf life of milk?

A: Yes. If you set the temperature at 38°F, it should ensure a shelf life of 7 days past the “Sell By” date you find on the container.

Q: How long should the product last after it’s opened?

A: This depends on several things:

  • How close to the “Sell By” date was the product originally opened?
  • How many times has it been opened and resealed?
  • How long did it remain unrefrigerated during each use?
  • Was the product consumed directly from the container?
Milk should remain fresh 5-7 days after it’s first been unsealed when stored and used properly. If the milk isn’t opened for the first time until on or just before the “Sell By” date, it may not last as long.

Q: Which dairy products can I freeze?

A: Here are some general guidelines to follow:

  • Milk can be frozen for up to 30 days. Always thaw frozen milk in the refrigerator. You might detect some off flavoring after you let it thaw.
  • Milk can be frozen for up to 30 days. Always thaw frozen milk in the refrigerator. You might detect some off flavoring after you let it thaw.
  • Cottage cheese will become mushy and watery once thawed because, when frozen, ice crystals swell and break the curd structure.
  • Sour cream is not recommended for freezing because the appearance and texture will change; it may also turn grainy and watery.
  • Fat-free sour creams tend to be more freezable than low-fat or regular sour creams. However, for best quality, you should avoid freezing them.
  • Whipping cream will not whip properly if it has been frozen.
  • Eggnog can be frozen, although you might detect some off flavors once it has been thawed. Always thaw frozen eggnog in the refrigerator.

Q: Do dairy products contain sugar?

A: Many dairy products contain lactose, the sugar naturally present in milk. Sugars are not listed on product nutrition panels unless other sugars have been added.

Q: Does Oak Farms Milk contain antibiotics?

A: No. All milks, regardless of producer, are required to be tested for antibiotics; if any antibiotics are found in the milk, it is rejected. Like all milk purchased in your favorite store, Oak Farms Milk does not contain any antibiotics.

Q: Does chocolate milk contain caffeine?

A: Yes. Chocolate milk contains about 3.7 mg of caffeine per 8-ounce serving, or 7.5 mg per 12-ounce serving. A 12-ounce serving of root beer has about 23 mg of caffeine, while brewed coffee has 203 mg.

Q: Does Oak Farms Dairy buy milk from cloned cows?

A: Based on the desire of our customers and consumers, Oak Farms Dairy will not accept milk from cows that have been cloned. If the FDA does approve the sale of milk from cloned cows, we will work with our dairy farmers to implement protocols to ensure that the milk they supply to us does not come from cloned cows.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to conclude that milk from cloned cows is safe. Our decision not to accept this milk is based on meeting our consumers’ expectations. We see no consumer benefit from this technology.

Numerous surveys have shown that Americans are not interested in buying dairy products that contain milk from cloned cows and Dean Foods is responding to the needs of our consumer.
